Professionals who want to offer mortgage advice need to meet FCA requirements. The Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) is the industry benchmark qualification, providing individuals with the appropriate qualification. CeMAP provides the knowledge and the ability to offer advice, whether independent or tied and is designed to ensure that the adviser obtains the highest quality educational material and assessment opportunities (LIBF, 2011). Mortgages are essential for the majority of house purchases, as long as people need homes they will always need good advice. Qualified advisers can also advise on second charges and retirement interest only mortgages, as well as Consumer Buy-to-Lets and investment Buy-to-lets. The CeMAP  qualification comprises of 3 modules which are all assessed by three 2 hour multiple choice exams undertaken at a Pearson Vue test centre, these are located all over the UK.  The LIBF have now rolled out the ability to sit the professional exams via remote proctoring,  this enables students to sit the exams from the comfort and safety of their own home.   To get your CeMAP®  qualification candidates will need to register with the London Institute of Banking and Finance for each module. The registration includes an exam fee (£215.00 per module) and the awarding of the qualification on successful completion of all 3 exams. CeMAP®  is split into 3 modules that cover 7 units:

• CeMAP® Module 1 (Exam:  Two 1 hour exams with 50 stand alone questions. 70% pass mark required per unit)
  • Unit 1: Introduction to Financial Services Environment and Products (50 questions – 70% pass mark) – 1 hour exam.
  • Unit 2: UK Financial Services and Regulation (50 questions – 70% pass mark) – 1 hour exam.
• Overview: CeMAP® 1 is the regulatory foundation module required for any professional qualification. The module helps candidates understand how financial markets and products work. It also covers how firms and individuals are authorised and regulated in the UK.
• CeMAP® Module 2 – Exam:  Four exams with 20-25 stand alone questions.
  • • Unit 3: Mortgage Law, Policy, Practice and  Markets (25 questions – 68% pass mark) – 30 minute exam.
    • Unit 4: Mortgage Applications (25 questions – 68% pass mark) – 30 minute exam.
    • Unit 5: Mortgage Related Protected Products (20 questions – 70% pass mark) – 24 minute exam.
    • Unit 6: Mortgage Payments Methods and Post Completion Issues (30 questions – 70% pass mark) – 36 minute exam.
• Overview: CeMAP® 2 covers all the relevant technical areas required to deliver regulated mortgage advice. Each stage of the mortgage process is covered within the syllabus highlighting the relevant regulatory rules within the FCA Mortgage Conduct of Business (MCOB) sourcebook.
• CeMAP Module 3 (Exam:  One 2 hour exam with 6 case studies with 10 related questions on each case study. (60 questions – 70% pass mark) – 2 hour exam.
  • Unit 7: Assessment of Mortgage Advice and Knowledge (60 questions)
• Overview: The final module looks at applying the knowledge gained in the previous units and testing the ability to formulate the knowledge.
